Books About Exchange Programs for Students of All Ages & Host Parents
In the past, I have had difficulty finding good books about selecting from among the many exchange programs, preparing for the exchange, being a host parent etc. I figured that others must have this problem too, so below is my booklist which might help you out.
I have looked in quite a few places and it seems that the best place to get current books on being an exchange student is from an online bookstore. Below are some books that I found helpful with links to Amazon.com is you are interested in reading more about them and/or buying them. If there are other books that you are aware of that are helpful, please let me know. My email address is dhaworth The books are in three categories:
Host Family Survival Kit: A Guide for American Host Families, by Nancy King and Ken Huff, Published by Intercultural Press, June 1997, ASIN: .
This book, which is based on case studies, is a good primer to help "expecting" host parents to prepare for a student exchange program. It discusses cultural differences and perspectives, culture shock (and how you can help), what to expect, how to deal with the development of your relationship with your exchange student, helping your exchange student adjust to life in a foreign land, setting up ground rules, money issues, working with special needs students, and interfacing with hosting organizations. It also includes good advice on dealing with common issues and problems. The author of one of the exchange student books I read (John Hawkes, Youth Exchanges) highly recommends this book and I have to agree -- this practical book is well worth $15. Now the bad news -- it is out of print (at least as of October 1999). Amazon.com will search its network of used book stores for you. You can click here to attempt an order. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend you try to get a copy of this book from you local library or Inter-Library Loan. The Student's Guide to the Best Study Abroad Programs (1996 edition), by Greg Tannen and Charley Winkler, Published by Pocket Books, June 1996, ISBN: .
This book is not for high school exchanges -- it is a guide to about fifty interesting study abroad programs for college students. It has write ups on some really interesting programs like "Semester at Sea"; "Brazilian Ecosystems"; ecology, rain forest management, and island, marine and coastal studies programs for numerous countries like Ecuador, Tanzania, Kenya, Australia; and, of course, more traditional semester abroad programs in Europe and Asia. This guide detailed discussions of academics, living arrangements, advice, tuition information and case studies. This is worth your time if you are a college student and are interested in going abroad for a semester. Click here to order this book from Amazon.com. Spending a Year Abroad: How to Have the Time of Your Life Anywhere Around the World (Living and Working Abroad), by Nick Vandome, Published by Trans-Atlantic Publications, Inc., October, 1997, ISBN: .
